Bubble King

The construction of this skimmer is top notch.
The Red Dragon pump, although consuming more power than advertised, pulled in much greater quantities of air than any of the other skimmers tested.
The Bubble King at the time of the start of the comparison, was the most talked about new skimmer on the market. Tons of hype, tons of chat, and only one skimmer in the country. Provided by Captive Oceans and delivered and setup by Madison. This skimmer never truly performed.
The Bubble King was on the system on 2 separate occasions. Each time for weeks at a time. Madison, sometimes stopped over multiple times a day to make adjustments to the skimmer. People called me on the phone, while watching on the webcam to make adjustments.
However, after a total time in the system of over 6 weeks, the Bubble King only skimmed consistently for more than a 24 hour period on only a couple of occasions (and for no more than 48 hours). Madison attempted swapping effluent tubes, impellers, and numerous 'ideas' to no avail. At the end of the comparison, I was told that a revised Bubble King using a new impeller, effluent tubes, valves and bubble plate was coming. However, the unit arrived in the US damaged.
The construction of this skimmer is great. The pump is silent and super efficient. I think the bubble diffuser is a flawed design. This is the natural location of sediment and detritus to settle in the skimmer, and yet it is a sealed area which cannot be cleaned.
One of the other things I discovered in working with the Bubble King is that the pump is overly sensitive. The pump/impeller is designed to move a maximum amount of air. In my opinion this might be the source of the issues we had in getting the skimmer to perform. Because the Red Dragon is so sensitive, any environment change dramatically affects performance. The best analogy I have for this is if you took a 600hp engine out of plane, and put it in a truck, the truck would not perform well - Because the plane engine is designed for high RPM and low torque.
The Red Dragon pump seems like a low torque motor. Examples that led to this were 2 key events. One day while cleaning my system, and stirring up the sand bed so the entire system was full of silt and cloudy. The Red Dragon pump could not push enough of the dirty water to even fill the chamber of the Bubble King. The second example occurred during our extremely wet winter out here in So Cal. One day while out in the yard, I had just cleaned and adjusted the Bubble King. I had adjusted it so that the bubbles were climbing the lift tube. All of sudden a cloud showed up overhead, there was a blast of lightning, and a thunder shower broke out. The foam head, in the bubble king collapased.
Following these two events I began to notice how slight changes in temperature, humidity, salinity, water clarity all had pronounced effects of the Bubble King. While I am aware that these variables outside in my yard are much greater than in the average person's home. The fact is that these changes didn't alter the performance, but killed it.
Without the opportunity to compare the 'revised skimmer' under more 'normal' environmental conditions, I wouldn't recommend this skimmer. In my opinion the model I was given to use was just too quirky, and no one, including the dealer was able to get it to perform.
