New to Copenhagen

Indlæg af RichB »

Hello,
Firstly, please accept my apologies for posting in English as I'm afraid I don't yet speak any Danish. I recently arrived to work in Copenhagen and now live in the Oesteport area of the City. I have been reefing with mixed success for some years, and I brought with me my http://innovative-marine.com/nuvo-aquarium/nano16.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I'm hoping to build a reef tank in my apartment here, but I would love some help. Firstly I desperately need to know the place to go:

Firstly I will need sand, salt and RO water plus live rock. Later, everything else -corals, a few reef fish and maybe some invertebrates.

I also don't yet have a car, most people don't seem to drive, so it's a heavy hobby to try to carry these things home on a bus/train - how do people do it here?

I'd also love opinions on my tank, particularly the lighting as I never got 'expert' opinions on what people felt i could / couldn't keep in the tank with those lights.

Once again, thank you in advance and sorry for using English!

Welcome to denmark.
The best place to go is decocean in Greve, this is only a saltwater shop and Carsten as the owner i called is one of the godfathers her in denmark.
There is alsow klovnfisken ( clownfish i danish) this is on Frederiksberg and closer to you, there you can get sand, not sure he has live rock. He also have fish and coral.

Hi Rich and welcome to Saltwater forum. :)

Denmark is a small country and particually saltwater is a very small hobby, so you see, everybody here knows everybody, and we are a bit like a family.

We discuss everything about saltwater, and we have some very good expert amongs us, I'd like to believe. :)

There are only two shops here on Sjælland: DecOcean and Klovnfisken.

In DecOcean you can get "saltwater hardware", fish, corals, sand, and Carsten knows quite a lot about our great hobby.

In Klovnfisken, you can get sand, corals and fish.

It can be a bit difficult to get to DecOcean, if you don't have a car, but there are always people who are going there, so you could try and get a lift with somebody. Just make an announcement. ;)

Greetings Rich, and welcome to Denmark, where are you from and what kind of experince do you have in keeping SW?

The two shops the other guys are reefering to are the once to go to in the Copenhage area.

"Klovnefisken" is situatet on "Fredriksberg alle" in Copenhagen and Decocean on "Højdevej" i Greve, if you dont have a car go to the two stores webshops, i think both of the does deliver their goodies :-)

Once again welcome, I'd love to hear what kimd of experince you have?

Thank you all very much for the welcomes and information! As for experience, I have always loved the Ocean, I've been diving all my life and I'm trained to PADI Divemaster, but when Im not able to dive, aquariums were my best way to not miss out! My parents had saltwater throughout my childhood, and I had a long time growing up without following in their footsteps until about 6 or 7 years ago when I got a saltwater tank again. I have had 4-5 Saltwater tanks since, Fish only with live rock, a mix and a couple of reefs, including my current tank. I have done a bit of voluntary work with sharks in Baltimore aquarium, as I have studies Elasmobranches all my life, and that's probably about all!

Hi Rich.
I think you've got plenty of good shops now, but noone helped you with the light yet.
I'm absolutely not an expert, but i think you need a lot more light if you want som hard corals in your aquarium.
I can't find the dimensions(height) of your tank, but it looks deep, and the lamps are only 8W.

I don't have mutch experience with lamps, so i think you will need someone else to tell you witch lamp you need.
I can just say, that it isn't enough if you want to keep light-loving corals as SPS.
You could probably keep some LPS species, if you put them high on the reef.
And of course azooxanthellae corals.

Yes thank you, I would definitely like opinons on what type of light I should add to be able to keep any corals I would like. It needs ideally to be a clip/hang on light because I have very high ceilings and no real ability to make anything to support a hanging overhead light. Probably makes sense to be LED as the other units are and I assume I should just get something to complement rather than replace them - what do you all think?

Hey Rich.
Welcome to the country and to this forum in particular
I'm not from Cph myself, but the stores already mentioned seems to be the ones to visit. Decocean being number one.

I think you should definitely go for LED lights. What to buy depends heavily on what you are willing to spend. The Maxpect is a good choice in my opinion, and I have seen lots of tanks with great growth and colours that ran than light.
DIY is another option. But you will need to have some soldering skills and some very basic sense of electricity to make that yourself. I've made a strip, and can assure you that it's not that hard at all :)
For full control over the light, like you get with a Maxspect, you'll need a higher degree of skill, and it will probably end up costing the same as a manufactured one.

What kind of flow do you have for the tank?

Best of luck with the project.

Cheers.

Thanks very much! Jonas, in answer to your suggestions/questions:
I have no clue about DIY electrics so I think I would be best to buy a shop made one if I can afford it! For flow I have the standard pump which I believe is about 200gph and a power head for added circulation (stats of which I don't recall.)

So, I have another question, given the dimensions of my tank, do you think I would need this new light AND my current lights or do you think the 24 x 24 is enough alone for the whole tank? What do you think?

Also does anyone have a pump they would recommend? It would need two outlet s for the two returns like the designed pump. I ask because I would like to have Danish plugs and hardware so getting a new pump might make sense.

You can use any pump that fits ... your current pump shouldn't have 2 outlets, but have an Y splitter that splits the hose thats connected to your pump into 2. The Tunze 1073.008 looks like it would be a perfect fit imo... its cheap, silent and has low power usage. http://www.decocean.dk/shop/p/1108" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It has a narrow channel at the back so it would certainly need to be quite a narrow pump to fit.

Isn't it a few stream pumps you need?
I would have more than one pump in that tank. It's relatively high. In a longer tak, the flow would probably spread out and cover the whole tank, but i don't think it's enough here.
